How Do You Actually Say Beuchat? And How It Differs from "Beau Chat"

Two syllables and you have it. BEU is not BEAU — one letter changes everything: one is the start of the French word for butter, the other means beautiful. Plus where the surname came from.

Beuchat is a French freediving and spearfishing brand I am very fond of. Almost nobody gets the name right first time.

Split it into two syllables and it resolves.

First syllable: BEU

EU is a single sound in French. You do not read the E and the U separately.

The easiest reference is butter — French beurre. The first syllable of Beuchat is exactly the first syllable of beurre.

Put the B on the front and you have bœ.

Second syllable: CHAT

So: sha.

Together

bœ-sha

That is all of it. Stop saying "Byoo-cha".

Why people get it wrong: BEAU and BEU differ by one letter

This is the interesting part.

French has the phrase beau chat, meaning "beautiful cat". It looks almost identical to Beuchat, but the first word carries an extra U:

SpellingFirst syllableMeaning
The brandBeuchatbœ (as in beurre, butter)a surname
Beautiful catBeau chatboa beautiful cat

B-E-A-U is "bo" — the French word for handsome or beautiful. B-E-U is "bœ" — the start of the word for butter.

The chat half is identical in both.

People go wrong because the eye links it to English beautiful, and so reads BEU as BEAU. One letter, but it is the one that matters.

The name is a person

Beuchat was established in Marseille in 1934 by Georges Beuchat.1

So, just as with Cressi, the brand name is the founder's surname.

According to Beuchat's own brand history, Georges Beuchat went on to invent the first underwater speargun.2
