Freediving in Taiwan

Learn slowly, dive safely.

Xiaoliuqiu, Taiwan

Leve-leve means “slowly, slowly” in São Tomé and Príncipe — and it is also how it felt when I first learned to freedive at Barracuda Lake.

The faster the world goes, the slower the mind should be. Freediving does not need rushing: understand your body, respect safety, and make room for calm. I would like to pass that on.

Divecube Hotel (Taichung)

From a first try to 21 metres deep

Opened in 2017 as Asia’s first diving hotel, Divecube centres on a 21m indoor pool—then Asia’s deepest. Its five stepped zones (1.3m, 3m, 7m, 11m and 21m), shipwreck and cave make it a rare place to begin shallow or train deeper. In central Taiwan, it is an easy stop before continuing north to Taipei or south to Tainan.

Mermaid freediving in Divecube Hotel (Taichung)'s deep pool

“Tu sais ce qu'il faut faire pour vivre au milieu des sirènes ?Do you know what you must do to live among mermaids?

Tu descends au fond de la mer très loinYou go down to the bottom of the sea, far down

Si loin que le bleu n'existe plusSo far that the blue no longer exists

Là où le ciel n'est plus qu'un souvenir”Where the sky is nothing more than a memory

Le grand bleu (1988)

The line in that video comes from Le Grand Bleu (1988). The film created an enormous interest in freediving, record attempts started appearing all over the world — and it became clear the sport needed a stable, safe set of rules.

About AIDA

AIDA was founded in 1992. Its full name is Association Internationale pour le Développement de l’Apnée, and it is the body that sets freediving education standards and sanctions competitions — the oldest freediving association in the world. The AIDA 1, 2 and 3 courses I teach belong to this system.
